## Prerequisites

### Admin rights for Windows Server and MS SQL Express

> ⚠️ If you are using MS SQL Express database installed together with CUE Solution on the same Windows Server, you need to **check the administrator permissions**. This is important **if multiple administrators manage the Windows Server and CUE Solution**.

To upgrade, the logged-in admin user must have administrative rights to Windows Server and **MS SQL Express**. Just because an administrator has admin rights on Windows Server does not mean that he also has admin rights on MS SQL Express. See [this chapter](https://cue.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/Dep/pages/1097072641) for details.

### Internet access

Update CUE Solution can be either online or offline.

- For online check that the CUE Server has internet access to the [downloads.cuesystem.com](https://downloads.cuesystem.com).
- For an offline update, download the latest version of the **CUE_Solution_Setup_x.x.x.exe **and the **CUE_Solution_Package_x.x.x.cuepac** installation package from the [support.cuesystem.com](https://support.cuesystem.com/space/TD/739344444) and save it to the server.

> ⚠️ To upgrade to some versions, **an online connection may be required to upgrade some components**. If this is required, please refer to the steps for installing that version.

### Important note

> ℹ️ The original **Cue Control Panel** installer has recently been renamed to **CUE Solution Setup**. After upgrading Cue Control Panel to CUE Solution Setup, CUE Solution Setup will appear as a new program in the program menu and the old Cue Control Panel will remain in the menu. **So now only use the new CUE Solution Setup**. You can then uninstall the old Cue Control Panel in the normal way, as it will no longer be needed.

### Additional steps required to upgrade to a specific version

Next, see if any additional steps are required to upgrade to the new version.

## Procedure

> Macro (excerpt)
>
> - Open the CUE Solution Setup select the installation at the top of the window, and click **Modify selected installation**.
>
>
> - Now the CUE Solution Setup will check if there is any Windows Update in progress. If it is not running, you can continue with the installation. If it is, you need to stop the installation and continue it when the Windows Update is complete.

- Click **Update**.

- If the server has Internet access, the CUE Solution Setup will now check the latest available online version. If installing the latest version of CUE Solution requires the use of a newer version of CUE Solution Setup, it will notify you and offer you to download it. If you click **Yes**, a web browser will open and the file will be downloaded to your download folder.

- If a CUE Solution Setup (formerly Cue Control Panel) update is required, close the CUE Solution Setup, run the downloaded **CUE_Solution_Setup_x.x.x.exe** file, perform the update and restart the server.
- Then re-launch the CUE Solution Setup and repeat the steps described above.
- A window will open where you can choose whether you want to update online or offline. Select the update method with the appropriate checkbox.
  - If the online update offers the version you want to install as the latest version, you can continue by clicking **Update**.

  - If you want to use offline update, choose this method and under **Package location**, select the location of the **CUE_Solution_Package_x.x.x.cuepac** file with the **Browse **button.

> ℹ️ If you are using an offline installation without internet access, the CUE Solution Setup will check if a new version of the CUE Solution Setup is required to install the selected version of CUE Solution. If so, it will prompt you to update it. In this case, download the required version of the Cue Control Panel installation file **CUE_Solution_Setup_x.x.x.exe** to the server and perform the update as described above.

> ℹ️ When you update the CUE Solution, a backup of the previous version is automatically created. The backup is stored in the backups subfolder where the website files are stored, typically *YourDisk:\Cue\NameOfYourInstallation\backups*, e.g. ***C:\Cue\Contoso\backups*** , If an error occurs during the update, the original state is automatically restored from this backup. However, we recommend that you keep this backup. This way, if the new version does not suit you, you will be able to restore the previous version. Therefore, we recommend leaving the** Keep backup of current version after successful update** checkbox checked.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ **If you are using an external MS SQL Server, now manually create a backup of the database for CUE Solution**. CUE Solution Setup cannot create database backups on external database servers due to access rights.

- You will now see a window with the changes since the last version. We recommend that you read the entire list and check if any further action is required on your part after the update. Continue with **OK **or abort the upgrade with **Cancel **if you need some preparation for the required changes.

- You may now be asked to fill in some information that was not needed in the previous version.
If you are upgrading between version 8 and below to version 9 and above, you will be asked to specify the paths where Kibana and Elasticsearch will be installed. In this case, first follow the procedure [here](https://cue.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/Dep/pages/802422795) and use browse to select the folders where Kibana and Elasticsearch will be installed.
Under **Elasticsearch memory limit**, set the maximum amount of RAM that Elasticsearch can use. We recommend using 30 - 40% of the total available RAM on the server.
You may also be prompted to enter [domains ](https://cue.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/Dep/pages/151224364)for new websites that are included in the new version. For example, if you are upgrading from version 8.6.1 to version 9.5.0, there is a new Outlook add-in CUE Addin application for which you need to add the Domain Name (URL), the path to the application website on the server disk, and the names of the IIS Pool and IIS Site, similar to the other sites (Admin, API, Assist). There are also new websites for Kibana and Elasticsearch. Fill in the relevant fields for all required new domains and continue with **Save / Next**.

- When creating a backup, it will ask you if you want to use the best compression possible. This will make the backup file significantly smaller, but the backup can take a very long time, up to several hours. Decide here whether you want to use the best compression.

- Now the update itself will take place. When it is finished, you will see the following screen.

- You can now close the CUE Solution Setup with **Finish **button and start working with the new version of CUE Solution.

> ⚠️ If the installation included Kibana and Elasticsearch, check if you have enough free RAM and if not, follow [these instructions](https://cue.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/Dep/pages/800424019).

> ℹ️ If the update fails for any reason, the original version is restored from backup. You will be informed of this on the screen. You will also have the option to save the error log file. You can use this later when troubleshooting.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ **If you are using an external MS SQL Server, restore the CUE Solution database manually from the backup.**
