IIS ([https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Information_Services](https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Information_Services) ) is the web server that is used in the CUE Solution. It is part of the Windows Server 2016-2019 operating system.

When deploying CUE Solution, it is sometimes necessary to perform minor operations or configuration changes in IIS.

## IIS Manager

IIS is managed using **Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager **(abbreviated IIS Manager), which is part of IIS. To run it, use *Start / Windows Administrative Tools / Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager*.

CUE Solution consists of multiple websites, each running in a separate **application pool**.

Application pools allow you to isolate your applications from one another, even if they are running on the same server. This way, if there is an error in one app, it won't take down other applications. Additionally, application pools allow you to separate different apps which require different levels of security.

## Start / Stop / Recycle application pool

In IIS Manager, click on Application Pools on the left side. A list of application pools is displayed in the central section. The icon on the left indicates if the application pool is running. In the picture below, the application pool ContosoAPIPool is stopped and the others are running.

On the right, under Application Pool Tasks, you can start, stop, or recycle the pool selected in the central window.

Recycling means that **the worker process that handles requests for that application pool is terminated and a new one is started**. This is generally done to avoid unstable states that can lead to application crashes, hangs, or memory leaks.
